Last week I started my new job as a Digital Copywriter for a marketing agency in Bolton. I genuinely can't believe how lucky I am to have been offered the job. All the panic of <i>'what am I going to do after uni'</i> seems to have subsided and now I'm focussed on starting a real life for myself in Manchester.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
After putting an deposit down on a new flat I started to question what my next move should be. I'm constantly working towards a goal and now I feel like I'm floating in limbo! Of course, I do feel blessed to be in this position, but it's definitely a lifestyle change!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This big change also means the content on this blog will no longer be about my time at uni. I intend on keeping this blog alive - I really do! So I'm putting together a lil plan. Due to the fact all of my followers are fashion&beauty bloggers, I'm going to post marketing content with you guys in mind.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
You can expect tips on SEO, content, social media and everything in between! </div>

<br />
This is more like a reblog however! I wrote another gif post. This time I'm talking about some important lessons we learn from our favourite Disney characters - because I'm a 21-year-old women in total control of her life(sort of.) Surely I should get a high five for my gif searching skills. When you're up at 1am, getting emotional over sad Stitch gifs, it shows you're totally dedicated to the cause.<br />
<br />
<i>I'd really appreciate it if you could share the post with your friends! </i>I'm a geek when it comes to statistics so I'm sat here just glaring at the numbers.<br />

How much is too much and will you actually remember any of it?<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQrefojPtCbNTF7t3Bi_Z6esQZv7Ds6HjZE-OBkREzvMyd3T7R5dbUbyyRPB6dcLYcUkae-mjgumiLUtsSv1VH9UifJ36HGxN3vyEHDazyYekePjYiLFAE-VVZzAvYjGiFhIcL_jYryJyu/s1600/photo.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQrefojPtCbNTF7t3Bi_Z6esQZv7Ds6HjZE-OBkREzvMyd3T7R5dbUbyyRPB6dcLYcUkae-mjgumiLUtsSv1VH9UifJ36HGxN3vyEHDazyYekePjYiLFAE-VVZzAvYjGiFhIcL_jYryJyu/s1600/photo.JPG" height="480" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
When I tell employers that I'm punctual, what I really mean is: I Google map daily to ensure I have the route in my head, I'll set off hours before schedule to avoid public transport mishaps and I'll also spend about an hour or more loitering around said office, nursing a coffee like it's my last meal.<br />
<br />
This might seem somewhat unnecessary, but the spare time before an interview can prove vital for ensuring you present yourself in the correct manner. Not only does it give you time to calm yourself, but it also gives you time to revise your interview technique and company knowledge.<br />
<br />
The image above was taken last week when I arrived over an hour early to the town where my interview would take place. It would have been over two if the train I caught had not been running late. Who'd have thought I'd ever be thankful for a late running train service? These notes were actually a more concise version of market stats, company history and my own thoughts on the job.<br />
<br />
Don't get me wrong, you're not there to be tested, but being in the know can set you apart. I've just had a call from a recruitment agent this morning taking me through an upcoming recruitment day. She said I'd be surprised at how many people turn up not knowing anything about the company they 'desperately' want to work for. Cringe! Here's a list of things I usually consider when researching for interview prep sheets:<br />
<br />
<b>History</b>
<li>When was the company established?<br />
</li>
<li>What are the core values of the company?</li>
<li>Have they previously won awards for their work?</li>
<li>How have they changed over time? Have they expanded, gained new contracts, started offering new products?<br /><b><br />Stats and figures</b></li>
<li>How many employees work for them?</li>
<li>Customer feedback surveys - particularly well-known companies. Search for Ofcom and Which? results.</li>
<li>Who is their biggest competition</li>
<b><br />Clients</b>
<li>General public or B2B?</li>
<li>Research on clients might be going a little bit too far but do always check out the portfolio of any B2B companies.</li>
<li>Can you profile their main demographic?</li>
<b><br />Personal attitude</b><br />
<div>
<li>Write down short quotes you'd like to fit in to your interview. Obviously you can't prepare a script, but short sentences will come back to you if you're not good at thinking on your feet.</li>
<li>Is this a permanent position or a short contract? If it's permanent ensure that you mention that you're in for the long haul. They are obviously looking for someone who is loyal.</li>
<li>Do you have a personal experience with the products the company offers? For example: I recently attended an interview with a publishing company which specialised in craft magazines. I made sure to talk about my passion for craft (and joke about my terrible knitting skills.) <i>Remember that it's not always about industry experience!</i></li>
<li>Don't just say you're 'good at working in a team, but have the initiative to work on your own'. Think of an actual example to illustrate your point. How many people before you have said they are 'self-motivated, hard working and great when working under pressure'.<br /><br />So did I remember any of my notes? Yes, surprisingly! Although I didn't really have a chance to show off my company knowledge, I did slip in their distribution figures. I was however slightly sour about forgetting my 'make do and mend' line. I worked hard on that little gem.<br /><br />You're not revising for an exam, but making yourself familiar with the company will make you feel ten times more comfortable when going for that all important interview. So do your research and thank me later!<br /><b><br />Good luck!</b></li>

<a href="http://static.someecards.com/someecards/usercards/MjAxMy0wNzRmNTI0MmU0ZDk1NDNm.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://static.someecards.com/someecards/usercards/MjAxMy0wNzRmNTI0MmU0ZDk1NDNm.png" height="448" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>52 days and counting.</i> <span style="text-align: justify;">I have officially finished my degree in journalism, but I've actually been looking for a permanent role since February. I'm no job snob either; I've taken every opportunity that's come my way. In the past few weeks I've been lucky enough to have some good interviews and I've set myself up with quite a few agencies. Despite this, I can't help but worry about what will come next.</span>
</div>
<div style="font-style: italic; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>TMI</b>: In 52 days my contract with my landlord ends. Until I find employment, I cannot find a new place to live due to financial risk and ensuring I have the correct transport links close by. If I don't find a job by the time my contract ends I will have to do the unthinkable... I'll have to move back to Blackpool. The land of binge drinkers and bleak job prospects. God forbid!</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is not a cry for help.</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is somewhat of a personal statement. I fought hard through education ever since I left high school. Finding a job is only going to be the same.<a href="http://moneyfor20s.about.com/od/studentloans/a/Making-It-Between-College-And-Your-First-Job.htm" target="_blank"> According to About.com</a>, it takes graduates around six months to find a job, so I'm not the only one facing this hardship by any means. Being in Manchester however, means that I have access to a lot more opportunities and I need to make the most of my current situation. (Having said that I'm applying for jobs all over the north west.)</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>So here's my mission:</b></div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Find a job. Find a job in the next 52 days.</div>
</div>
<div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Considering I've been applying since February, I'm in a better position and the ball is rolling. However, time is ticking and 'the real world' (as my non-student relatives like to call it) is waiting.</div>

<br />
It's my last year of working with Cosmo On Campus. Being Campaign Manager for Salford University has truly been an amazing experience. I've loved every minute of both campaigns, especially meeting new students and seeing my confidence grow.<br />
<br />
This year I wanted to create a new element to my campaign by implementing social media. Notices on the SU Facebook page just didn't cut it for me!<br />
<br />
In the last few months 'selfie culture' has exploded. The 'no make up selfie' campaign and that ridiculously catchy song by The Chainsmokers has made it impossible to escape! Thus 'CosmoSelfie' was born. As an alternative to campaign photos of passersby grabbing a mag, I asked<i> (begged) </i>readers to pose for a selfie for our Instagram account.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjsgLexJfHTO8__VUzIgIJCb-BgMgB0t1KtsZz0s3EVLCibvwvUNqfql771wYb2p6YucZSGzAvbkI22tTHZjau4bloKsNkXWMHQnFqqr7AyO2LhxARyeJ92SbFN9zns1LQIfFY6h6QAlcv/s1600/cosmoselfie.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjsgLexJfHTO8__VUzIgIJCb-BgMgB0t1KtsZz0s3EVLCibvwvUNqfql771wYb2p6YucZSGzAvbkI22tTHZjau4bloKsNkXWMHQnFqqr7AyO2LhxARyeJ92SbFN9zns1LQIfFY6h6QAlcv/s1600/cosmoselfie.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The whole set up added a new buzz to the campaign. I ended up joining student activity groups to get some group snaps and everyone involved seemed to love the idea. In particular, Salford University Dance Society who took time out of their rehearsals to pose for some shots that genuinely had me in stitches!<br />
<br />
<i>This was the perfect end to my final campaign and I'm extremely grateful to have been given this opportunity.</i>Philocalisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08495006397349901282noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-608036544188407257.post-69888606611288328532014-02-28T14:04:00.002+00:002014-02-28T14:04:29.838+00:00Reclaim the Night | Manchester 2014<center>
<iframe allowtransparency="true" frameborder="0" height="660" scrolling="no" src="//instagram.com/p/k7uA14wDM6/embed/" width="550"></iframe></center>
I've just taken a quick break from editing the full video to share this little clip with you all. The Reclaim the Night march was nothing short of incredible. I was completely overwhelmed by the turn out.<br />
<br />
One thing I also though was wonderful was the inclusion of the LGBT community. In previous years, I'd often heard friends talk about how they felt marginalised when they attended. Street harassment spans across sexualities and genders. Although Reclaim the Night may have begun as a women's rights movement, we're going to make a bigger impact if we stand and fight as one.<br />
<br />
Thankfully my colleague Craig Carroll bought along a secondary camera to help me get as much footage as possible. We managed to get a few voxes, but the radio mic didn't seem to be picking up clear audio. We swapped the mics, but by the time we'd sorted ourselves out, the march had begun!<br />
<br />
I've altered the style of video to combat the technical issues and it should be ready tonight/early tomorrow morning.<br />
<br />
I had an amazing night meeting all the interviewees and seeing everyone speaking out against the patriarchy. Well done to you all!Philocalisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08495006397349901282noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-608036544188407257.post-42939510949429915942014-02-26T21:01:00.000+00:002014-02-26T21:01:21.575+00:00Story leads and luxuries<div style="text-align: center;">

I've been treating myself here and there in a desperate attempt to find material motivation. Yankee candles, Lush cosmetics... anything that is going to make me and my surroundings smell good generally puts me in a good mood! I even bought a 1996 pug TY Beanie bear as a mascot!
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Yesterday I had an great pre-interview meeting, which has lead to a few new leads. We ended up going off on quite a few tangents, but it was great to know I'd found someone who is so passionate about equality and activism.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We got chatting about Ireland, which is where my interviewee is from. Ze informed me about the Alternative Miss Uslter event and I was instantly intrigued! I'm set to do a live-blogging marathon on the 8th, so I won't be able to cover the event. I'll be covering it in some way though. It's such an amazing idea that needs to be heard!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
For now, I'm getting everything prepped for filming 'Reclaim the Night'. I'm slightly apprehensive as to how the LED lights are going to make the footage look. Grainy footage is not what I need! My friend from university will be helping me get secondary footage, so hopefully I'll have enough shots to work with.<br />
<br />
Wish me luck!</div>
Philocalisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08495006397349901282noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-608036544188407257.post-27378086378948407562014-02-19T11:00:00.000+00:002014-02-20T00:35:31.206+00:00"So basically, your project is just about women moaning." <div style="text-align: justify;">
This response is exactly why my FMP will focus on women's rights campaigns. I've always had an interest in both campaign journalism and feminism, so it would only be fitting to let my passion drive my final degree project. It's just a shame some of my friends evidently do not share my outlook!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Whilst pitching my ideas to my tutor, I realised the potential my project has. Not only does it lead itself to various mediums, there are some great opportunities to try something completely different in terms of online journalism. I just hope I do the subject justice.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7429/12645382034_0fc0025068_c.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7429/12645382034_0fc0025068_c.jpg" height="440" width="640" /></a></div>
<i>My initial plan entails: </i><br />
Reclaim the Night - video project<br />
International Women's Day - marathon live blogging with OnLocation<br />
Does the UK need Femen? - feature on extreme feminism in the UK<br />
No more page 3 - campaign coverage<br />
Rape Culture - Mini doc, potentially historical<br />
What makes me a woman? - My own campaign working with transwomen.
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I have left four spaces for potential breaking news and surplus work. Hopefully some of these stories will catch your eye as I will be using my blog to heavily promote my work, amongst other things.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
A lot of thought has gone into this. I knew I wanted to focus on some form of feminism/women's issues, but I just had to find the right title. Although this is a very stressful time for any student, I am so blessed to have a topic that I can get excited about.<br />

Every article I write will primarily be content for Allié. The next 4 months will be dedicated to building the amount of content on the site and it's consistency. I've rewritten our business plan and I'm meeting with a few of my contacts to talk about a revised marketing strategy.<br />
<br />
I've included a few snaps I've taken in the last few weeks. The first being my desk. I find myself working later and later into the night. Or should I say 'early hours of the morning'? There's also a lil snap I took of Salford Quays whilst taking a coffee break. Being able to work at Media City is a blessing, but when you've been staring at a computer screen for hours seagulls start to look pretty interesting!<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Buzzfeed is quite possibly my favourite discovery of 2013. It's a place where all aspects of the internet spectrum have a place. Want to keep up to date on Russia's anti-gay policies, then calm yourself down with pictures of cute dogs? Well then, you've stumbled across the right place.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Buzzfeed seem to have cracked the code in terms of going viral. They post a variety of engaging content that you just can't help but share.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
When I started writing this blog post I had just posted my first 'gif' post in the hope of getting noticed. Within two hours I received an email to update me on my progress. I expected maybe a hundred hits tops, but this happened:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<blockquote class="tr_bq">
<i>"Your post, 'The Emotional Struggles Of Shop Assistants During The January Sales', was added to the Community front-page! That means our Community editor thought it was awesome. Amazing work!"</i></blockquote>
What a fantastic way to start 2014! I even set a cheeky tweet to the editor Luke Lewis in the hope that the UK office would notice.<br />
<br />
I probably chose the wrong time to post my idea to Buzzfeed as many of my friends were out ringing in the new year, as such promoting the page was an issue. This morning I've been trying to plug it in any way possible, so you might notice it floating around the internet this morning!<br />
<br />
I have a notebook full of ideas to crack on with for 2014 and I just can't wait to dive in!<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.buzzfeed.com/jessicawilby/the-emotional-struggles-of-shop-assistants-during-i5zq">Please 'like', share, comment and help me in any way possible. I'd be eternally thankful for any plugs. Hopefully it will also bring a smile to your face :)!</a></div>

<b>P.S There's Mr.Bean and Mr.Blobby gifs, what more could you want?</b></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I'm so thankful to everyone who has recently submitted content to Allié. I'm aware that most will only be submitting for portfolio reasons and that's completely fine, but you're welcome to keep the articles coming (hint, hint)!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I originally worried that people would try to use the site as a 'cop-out', but the amount of great content and effort people went to has been really overwhelming. To see people submit this level of content when they've already got a lot of university work on their plate has been really heart warming.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Every day I become more and more tempted to take a huge risk and set Allié up full time after university. I think it's most likely that I'll take a job in HR/admin when I finish my degree, just to make sure I have money to live in Manchester. This would certainly be a less risky option as I could continue to run the site part time. Perhaps one day I'll be secure enough to throw myself into Allié full time, but for now I'll keep dreaming!</div>
Philocalisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08495006397349901282noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-608036544188407257.post-20432209150331830092013-11-03T16:14:00.000+00:002013-12-06T20:50:34.114+00:00Credits from the last month<div style="text-align: justify;">
I've tried to get as many things out as possible of the few weeks. However, in terms of features, things haven't exactly gone to plan! I've found myself involved in a lot of PR work. By PR work, I really mean making sure 'Churnalism' isn't happening. I'm grateful for the opportunities I've had lately, but this certainly doesn't show my full capabilities.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Thus this next week will be dedicated to publishing some more intense features. I'm currently writing a 'Catfishing' profile feature and I'm interviewing Vanessa from Cam Girl Project. Both will be published on Allié.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Today I've been working towards our newsday assessment at uni. I'm going to be working on a TV package regarding pinioning with my friend Beth. Originally I was only helping with the research side, until I offered to film and edit.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
TV is not my preferred medium, but I feel the story would work great with moving images. I think it will be really interesting to get behind the camera again. I'm also really looking forward to working with Beth. We've worked together creating radio talk shows in the past and she always works hard. One thing I often have trouble with at university is people who don't want to pull their weight. You'd be surprised by how many people still behave that way in HE!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
The picture above is from my lecture. In between slides Beth and I emailed charities, zoos and campaigners to arrange filming. Once I get started on a project, I make sure I see it to the end and do a damn fine job of it! I'm glad I've got something new to throw myself into.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I mentioned a few posts ago that I have started my new Christmas job at Lush. The training has been absolutely fantastic and I've genuinely enjoyed every moment of it. I originally knew a lot of their products, but now I understand them on a whole other level. We've learnt the science of hair care and skin care, how to work with different skin types, dying with henna; I feel like I should have a Lush degree!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I'm most looking forward to getting out on the shop floor. I think the more face to face interaction I have, the more I am going to grow and change. I've had shop jobs here and there, but I've been waiting for an opportunity like this to really explore sales and social interaction. I am also greatly looking forward to Christmas. Our new range looks incredible and I can't wait to show you all!<i> Pop into Lush Arndale for a consultation with me!</i> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Yesterday I also attended a meeting for the new student newspaper. It's our first year making the jump to online so things have been hectic. Having said that, I am greatly disappointed with the organisation of our recruitment drive and although I take my features editor role seriously, I am feeling exasperated by the whole situation. For now, I'm operating in my own bubble. I want to make content that students will love reading and those that don't will still talk about. I don't want the paper to be ignored in the same way that it has been in the past. We have great writers involved already, it's just a shame they may not be able to show and nurture their talent in a structured way. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I will do what I can but at the end of the day it's a team effort!</div>

<i>Guess who found a placement?</i></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
This week I've been able to work on IloveManchester.com. I visited the office on Tuesday to work on a project regarding small businesses and rewriting press releases. Since then I've been working from home because I'm training for my other new job. It's been really interesting to see how a seemingly small business can take on so much work and gain so much interest.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I'll be having a week block placement at IloveManchester for part of my third year 'Journalism Practise' module. I'm really excited because I absolutely loved my first day in their Barton Arcade office! They share another office with Viva mag so I'm hoping to gain some contacts there as well.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Overall it's been lovely working on a local scale!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
This week entails placement interviews, training, freshers fair prep and of course more Allié!<br />
<br />
I'm excited to say that I've finally got myself a job that I can fit around my studies! I'll be working in my local Lush store. It's safe to say I know Lush products inside and out. After being a long-term fan of their excellent range and wonderful ethics; it feels amazing to say that I am now a part of their team.<br />
<br />
I have a few placement interviews lined up. Hopefully they'll pull through because in the past I have been promised opportunities that haven't materialised. My plan is to visit as many places as possible to get the most enriched and varied experience.<br />
<br />
Freshers fair will be taking place on 18th-19th. I'm so exciting to be heavily involved in the paper this year. I pulled an 'all-nighter' on Thursday night and managed to generate 3 pages of solid ideas for the features section. Although I am a student, it's actually been a challenge trying to tag into what my fellow students will want to read. I wouldn't exactly class myself as a typical student and most of my research lead to very 'lad-culture' orientated content.<br />
<br />
Today I updated the Allié jobs page. This time I've asked for people to pitch ideas, rather than apply to be a part of the team. This is purely because we've had a lot of people join us and not actually submit anything. It has been highly frustrating, but I hope that this new way will ensure that the content we create will be of a higher standard.<br />
<br />
I've been so busy recently that I've had to turn down events and visiting my family in Newcastle. It's disappointing, but I really feel like I'm progressing now. Fingers crossed I'll be able to find something that takes on graduates so I can stay in Manchester after uni!Philocalisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08495006397349901282noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-608036544188407257.post-29986267437794850082013-08-22T13:12:00.001+01:002013-08-22T13:12:28.096+01:00Stage fright 1:0 Me<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Since starting university, I've managed to swerve quite a few potentially awkward situations. Working on Allié, on the other hand, is a totally different ball game.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
On Wednesday I planned a presentation for our contributors regarding our first issue<i> (it's still exciting saying that.) </i>I'd prepped a powerpoint and watched countless TedX videos to copy everyones inspirational presence. Yet things didn't exactly go smooth! Cue a lot of faffing with the presentation screen and a few let downs regarding attendance.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I delivered the presentation and had a good chat with some of our contributors, but I didn't feel like I had the desired impact. I've read a lot about how it's often hard to get other people to believe in your own vision, but I've not yet seen it before my eyes. It's not that I feel defeated, just deflated. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
My friend and I retreated to Wagamama to re-evaluate the situation. We're going to arrange another meet up when the new semester has started to cash in on everyone's burst of motivation. The meeting wasn't exactly a failure, but it still isn't sitting right with me. At least I've got high hopes for take 2! ...And that cha han and miso soup definitely cured my disappointment!</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
<i>I'm currently sat in the middle of an internet café receiving glares from a man who clearly wants to use the charge point.</i></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<i><br /></i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The new house I've moved to still doesn't have an internet connection. I feel like I've been plunged into the dark ages! As such, I'm seriously behind on my emails.<b> Incoming: 86 of 134</b>, the most horrific sight I've ever seen.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
However, this has all been a blessing in disguise. The experience of life without the internet has actually been really refreshing. No longer do I lay awake aimlessly scrolling through Tumblr. Instead I've been working my socks off on InDesign. Allié's first issue is coming! As we speak I'm putting together a powerpoint to deliver at Media City for our contributors. I'm not fond of public speaking so I've been watching TEDx videos and trying to replicate each speaker's stage presence.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As I come into my final year of university, a feeling of impending doom lingers. It's a battle not letting my anxieties seep into my work. To combat all worries I've been taking on as much work as possible and keeping my mind occupied. I'm submitting to a couple of new zines and building pitches for other mags. Let's just hope I'll have a few more sections to add to my portfolio page by the end of the month!</div>

<br />
My final module piece will be a 2000 word feature for a North West based audience. An extremely broad brief allowed me to explore many social issues. Originally I considered teen pregnancy, anorexia and drug abuse. However, these seemed to be part of a more national issue and it was hard to squeeze them down into one region.<br />
<br />
Don't get me wrong, male suicide is a serious national issue, but I feel that particular traditional lifestyles in the north create a social barrier for men suffering in silence. Thus, I've been exploring what can be done to tackle this issue and what makes NW men at risk.<br />
<br />
It's been a real challenge for me. Not only is this issue quite close to home, but obviously I'm also not a man so I can't instantly relate to traditional male roles. In the past, I've focused heavily on women's issues but I feel being a feminist goes beyond standing up for your fellow females. It's about gender equality. That's another reason why I was particularly drawn to this subject. We hear a lot about how gender roles effect women, but little about how they effect men. Breaking down these social constructions allows us to create a better world for both men and women alike.<br />
<br />
I've yet to finish my piece. I'm currently writing up a very personal interview so it's been rather tough to get through. A friend told me the worst thing you can do with a story like this is to get emotionally involved, <i>evidently I didn't get that memo! </i><br />
<i><br /></i>
I'll probably put my piece on here after I've received feedback.Philocalisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08495006397349901282noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-608036544188407257.post-3152911691509620072013-04-13T14:02:00.001+01:002013-04-13T14:02:51.767+01:00Free product descriptions<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<b>I've got a confession to make!</b> I'm an absolute sucker for product design. Packaging, product descriptions and general hype surrounding something, gives me an undeniable urge to purchase! Although it's slightly embarrassing, I'm positive I'm not the only one.<br />
<br />
Product description in particular is an area I'm extremely keen on exploring. After working on beauty reviews and SEO for Allié Magazine, I'd like to apply my skills to a new avenue.<br />
<br />
For a while now, I've found myself reading <a href="https://www.lush.co.uk/lush-times">The Lush Times</a> from page to page. I already know most of the products, but I appreciate the creativity that has gone into each page. I also love a good pun or two, which Lush is notorious for! <a href="http://www.philosophyskincare.co.uk/">Philosophy</a> is another brand that springs to mind. Instead of overly romanticised facts about how certain ingredients can work miracles, their bottles are adorned with short stories and recipes.<br />
<br />
I'd ideally like to start exploring a more creative side of writing whilst supporting independent brands. Although I am a competent writer, I'm aware that my lack of experience in this field creates somewhat of a risk for companies. My idea is to offer my services, <b>free of charge</b>, to small online companies looking to enhance SEO and entice new customers.<br />
<br />

<br /></div>
This week I've been trying to think of a few ways to get the blogger community involved with Allié. This morning I put up <a href="http://alliemag.co.uk/allie-loves-lifestyle-blogging/">a small collection of blogs</a> from our writers, where you can share your own blog in the description! <b>Everyone loves a bit of free advertising right?</b> We'll tweet our favourites later in the week.<br />
<br />
I have to be honest, I don't entirely know where I'm going with it all. Amongst all my ideas, only one thing is certain; I want bloggers involved. When I first started blogging in 2009, people were so welcoming and really helped me progress.<i> Without sounding soppy, </i>I want to give something back!<br />
<br />
Things we've got in the works:<br />
<ul>
<li>Competitions - I signed up to Rafflecopter! I'm just wondering what would make a good prize. <b>If you have any suggestions let me know! </b></li>
<li>Featured blogger </li>
<li>'Show me your wardrobe' - I was thinking of saving this feature for print/digital download, but I might do a few trials on the site. Again, it's like free advertising for bloggers and a chance for them to </li>
</ul>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b><a href="http://alliemag.co.uk/allie-loves-lifestyle-blogging/">So click here and share your blog link!</a> Don't forget to get your friends involved and make sure you check out other listed blogs :)!</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
<b>You can <a href="https://twitter.com/AllieMagazine">follow us on Twitter here </a>to see which blogs get a mention.</b></div>

My latest feature went live on Allié Magazine today! This piece was originally written for a university assignment. I received a high 2:1 grade, but being only 2% away from a first was admittedly rather annoying!<br />
<br />
My aim was to find whether being part of a promotion team was all it's cracked up to be. Having lived in university halls in my first year, I was constantly receiving flyers offering jobs in club promotion. Since it's a popular earner for students, I was interested in finding out more!<br />
<br />
My interviewee was very open. In the piece we discuss drinking, relationships and sex. Before interviews I often panic about asking awkward questions, but during interviews, it's best to just be up front!<br />
<a href="http://alliemag.co.uk/paid-to-party-the-life-of-a-promo-girl/"><br /></a>
<a href="http://alliemag.co.uk/paid-to-party-the-life-of-a-promo-girl/">I'd appreciate it if you could take a look and leave some comments! Maybe even your own experiences?</a>Philocalisthttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08495006397349901282noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-608036544188407257.post-43449696087067925442013-03-08T19:13:00.000+00:002013-03-09T02:31:25.608+00:00From women's mags to wellies<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div>
<br /></div>
For the past 2 weeks I've been working as the Cosmo On Campus campaign manager for Salford University. My job was to create a buzz around campus about the latest issue and hand out free copies.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I had 30 bundles stacked up in my living room! It was rather daunting but the pile certainly went down fast. Getting out there and visiting each building on campus was a surprisingly enjoyable task. I was surprised at how many people stopped to chat instead of just walking off with their free mag. This was a great experience as not only did I soak up a lot of market information, I also got to grips with the more official side by contacting student accommodations and officials to get permission to distribute and spread the word.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The following week, after I had finished the Cosmo campaign, a contact of mine offered me a new work placement opportunity! It's in the very early stages at the moment so I can't say too much about what I'll be getting up to, but I'll be working with The Wildlife Trust. The placement will give me an insight into PR and help me add to my growing writing portfolio.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I appreciate any opportunities that come my way and I'm determined to perform to the best of my ability. I'll be blogging updates, but for more up to date info you can always check out my social networking accounts.</div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8FjH-9WpFFMKf7GbLLTZqayOGT9Y1r5PBH-1Dp4HnY4X6g4thmfRllf1PGHwA6NkjCREnwjOyl-hgWaOccOvrKxstuqk-eTjeMB1hMSqfBc8xbWVnjy_wQNXv_T4H6qmX6YGiWgbrT3GL/s1600/68941_10151284262088837_560062741_n.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8FjH-9WpFFMKf7GbLLTZqayOGT9Y1r5PBH-1Dp4HnY4X6g4thmfRllf1PGHwA6NkjCREnwjOyl-hgWaOccOvrKxstuqk-eTjeMB1hMSqfBc8xbWVnjy_wQNXv_T4H6qmX6YGiWgbrT3GL/s400/68941_10151284262088837_560062741_n.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This week I started as the Cosmo On Campus campaign manager for Salford. It's a great honour to represent such a respectable magazine, especially considering I've been a long-term reader! I'm really going all in on this project. Despite the recent weather conditions, I'm not put off about the idea of hand to hand distribution. It's going to be really nice getting out on campus and having the opportunity to have a natter with fellow students!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I've also got some good news regarding <a href="http://alliemag.co.uk/">Allié</a>! We've had a huge increase in traffic to the website and have smashed our monthly target. I've very proud of all the writers and the effort they've put in! Admittedly I've become rather obsessed with Google Analytics Real Time.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
University is also keeping me busy. Anyone who follows me on twitter will know that for my last Print Journalism project I chose to write a news feature on the sex industry in my home town. This was a huge task. Despite the risqué subject, I found many interviewees were willing to talk about their career choices. Whilst I had a great response from the workers, I struggled getting comment from official bodies. I had been very worried about how this let my piece down. However, I got my grades back yesterday and can proudly say I finished the module on a 2:1 grade!</div>

<i>I've spoken briefly about my latest project Allié on Twitter but I think it's time for a bit more detail.</i><br />
<br />
Allié is a new online magazine aimed at women 18-25. I'm trying to create a website with all the popular features of mainstream glossies, with added female empowerment. I feel it's greatly important to support and inform women, who are still discriminated against in wider society. The website currently has three categories; discussion, fashion and lifestyle.<br />
<br />
I'm pulling in every favour I have from contacts and friends to make this work. The goal is to gain a substantial audience and then to develop a digital magazine to go on sale on Apple Newsstand.<br />
<br />
This is a very exciting time. I already have a small team of talented writers on hand to push-start our content. There seems to be a real buzz around working on the magazine and everyone seems enthusiastic. I'm actually surprised at how many people want to get involved!<br />
<br />
The website is still looking for writers if anyone is interested in building their CV <a href="http://alliemag.co.uk/jobs">Alliemag.co.uk/jobs</a> .<br />
